How to play
Two players take turns moving their pieces. Pawns, rooks, knights, bishops and the queen each move in their own way, helping to attack and defend the king. The aim is to deliver checkmate.
Before moving, compare the squares your pieces control and the replies available to the other side. Protecting an important square can be more useful than an immediate capture.
If you are learning, begin by checking whether your king is safe and which pieces are under attack. A useful move solves a current problem while preparing the next one.
